Work-wear – health and safety for women in the U.S. construction industry

In the U.S. the responsibility for health and safety at work falls under the jurisdiction of the United States Department of Labor, Health and Safety at Work (OSHA). In the construction sector has also the contribution of the Advisory Committee on Construction, Safety and Health (ACCSH), an independent committee that provides an additional perspective on security issues OSHA construction provided. Normally, if a risk assessment has been done, and wasdecided to PPE is required for workers little thought to the following reflection:

• E 'suitable and appropriate for the risks to the environment in which it is used?
· E 'to prevent or adequately control risks without increasing the overall level of risk?
• The health of employees who carry the EPP account has been extracted?
· What are the requirements of the labor market and requirements arePlaces of the wearer, for example, the limited visibility, the duration of the PSA must be taken and physical stress of the carrier places the PPE?
• Can the appropriate training if necessary?

If these fundamental questions would be asked was not the cry two decades ago there were many women in the construction industry in the United States, certainly the women of Chicago (CWIT – Chicago Women in Trades), and women who have their voicesNIOSH (National Institute for Health and safety at work). Unfortunately, many of the issues raised are not answered satisfactorily. EPP in relation to women complained that little or no smaller than – the light of the first element to the previous list, and that the second and fourth, could easily, if the complaint was the comfort and fit on the mind buyer approached the company are responsible for the PSA.

Oversized clothing is itselfdanger! However, employers who were considered the industry standard and women with the "crying Fashion / FIT" grounds, rather than on safety. Clothing or equipment that is not the size or inappropriate can actually undermine the personal security. Can not operate effectively in the manner for which it was designed. The report explains that "ill suited to undermine the protection offered under clothes or equipment. Lack of adequate IPR PPC and may cause serious security flawsand health risks for women and smaller men who rely on protective clothing and equipment to help them keep safe.

Having inadequate or ill-fitting clothes, boots, gloves or protective equipment, a security risk for all workers. "It 'seems that there has been little effort to take account of the physically smaller of women and the size of safety such as clothing for otitis, was responsible for protection and face sizes women's. Shoes and gloves were often inadequate or, as appropriate formay be the female workers in the construction industry, which because of the unavailability (ie, must not make the manufacturer or distributor does not have), the limited availability or lack of knowledge among employers and workers about where equipment for the structure of a woman's body can be obtained. There is no excuse good enough.
